This is a story about politics, religion and the human soul.
It is a story about the mythic, largely unconscious beliefs of the American people, and the inescapable shadow side of those beliefs.
It is a story about the spirit of democracy — a spirit inherently alive within us and between us on every level of our human experience. It is about the choice we face, each moment, between democracy, in which we honor the other, and dominance, in which we control and use each other.
Each generation faces this choice anew, and this is a story that tells how this generation is failing itself and failing the world by choosing dominance over the democratic spirit and intent of the American Founders.
This story is about our shared humanity — our brilliance and blindness, our madness and redemptive love — a story, finally, about how our hope lies in embracing the paradox of what it means to be fully human, and learning to treat others with the spirit of compassion, forgiveness, service and love that we ourselves deeply desire. That spirit is the very heart and soul of democracy in action.
The spirit of democracy cannot be imposed from without. It has to come from within. ~ Gandhi
